The Prey-system in Quel’Thalas is more than just a world activity; it’s a tiered progression system called the Preyseeker’s Journey. If you are stuck at Rank 3, you are not alone—here is why and how to push forward.
📈 Preyseeker Ranks & Unlocks
Progression is gated by “Prey Seeker Journey” experience (Reputation).
- Rank 1-2: Access to Normal Hunts.
- Rank 3: Access to Hard Mode Hunts. (This was the cap until the March 17 reset).
- Rank 4+: Access to Nightmare Hunts.
- Note: You need 4,000 XP to move from Rank 3 to 4. Since you get 1,000 XP per hunt for the first 4 hunts of the week, you can finally unlock Nightmare starting this week (March 18).
💎 Rewards: What Drops Where?
The loot from Prey is divided into the Hunt Chest (direct drop) and the Great Vault (weekly).
| Difficulty | Hunt Chest (2x per week) | Great Vault (Weekly) | Crests |
| Normal | ilvl 228 (Adventurer) | ilvl 238 (Veteran) | Weathered |
| Hard | ilvl 238 (Veteran) | ilvl 250 (Champion) | Veteran |
| Nightmare | ilvl 250 (Champion) | ilvl 259 (Hero 1/6) | Champion |
⚠️ Important: You only get gear from the first two hunts of each difficulty per week. After that, you only earn Crests and Journey XP.
💀 Nightmare Mode: The “Handicaps”
Nightmare is a solo-only challenge. No groups allowed, and the following “Torments” (affixes) are active:
- Bloody Command: Every 60 seconds, you must kill a mob (even a critter counts). If you don’t, you take a massive stacking DoT.
- Echo of Predation: A shadowy clone of yourself spawns and chases you. If it touches you, it deals 80% of your HP as damage. Kite it!
- Seeping Gore: Periodically spawns pools under your feet. Move out immediately.
- Death Penalty: Unlike Normal, dying during a Nightmare hunt reduces your progress bar. If you die too often, the hunt fails and you lose your Anguish.
💡 Pro-Tips for Efficient Hunting
- The Trap Trick: Always disarm traps you find in the open world. You can use these during an ambush to instantly deal 50% damage to the Prey, forcing them to retreat immediately and speeding up your hunt by minutes.
- Don’t Ignore the Mist: After an ambush, follow the red blood mist. Click your Prey in the mist to get a massive progress boost toward the final encounter.
- The “Double Dip”: Do your 2 Hard Hunts first for the Veteran gear, then push to Rank 4 to unlock your 2 Nightmare Hunts for Champion gear. This is the fastest way to ilvl 255+.
- Class Advice:
- Tanks: Ignore the affixes and pull everything to the Prey. Your self-heal will carry you.
- Casters: Use Slows and Roots on the “Echo of Predation” clone. It is susceptible to CC!
